St Helens Cultural Awards

The event celebrates the wide range of creative talent across St Helens.

The Awards raise the profile of, and give recognition to the projects, people and organisations that contribute to the cultural offer in the Borough. Everything from music and art to sport and heritage are covered in the Awards. The event itself is a fitting showcase for the talented nominees and winners. Last year’s Awards attracted an exceptionally high standard of entrants which is only set to grow even further.

The next round of cultural awards will be the first time there has been a group category for Dance. Bespoke Dance Company will be entering a variety of group pieces, showcasing our diverse choreographic and performance skills.

St Helens Youth Dance Festival

The St. Helens Youth Dance Forum will be hosting its 26th Annual Youth Dance Festival at The Theatre Royal, St.Helens on May 24th, 25th, 26th and 27th 2010. The St.Helens Youth Dance Festival is a celebration of dance from St. Helens Schools and Community groups which was originally showcased in our secondary schools but this year is our 10th year at The Theatre Royal. Over the years, thousands of local children have performed at the Festival, primary children through to A Level Dancers and for some schools it has become a tradition. This Year, The St. Helens Youth Dance Festival is part of a ‘Special Dance Week’ which has been organised by St. Helens Council which will involve lots of Dance Activity for all ages at various venues in the borough.

Bespoke Dance Company will perform two pieces from their repertoire, ‘Black Velvet’ and ‘We Didn’t Start the Fire’ on Thursday 27th May. The company has invited previous members to perform as well as recruiting several new dancers.

“We have been working really hard to pull everything together and the pieces are looking fantastic. Everyone is looking forward to dancing at the theatre, performing is a feeling like no other.”

De La Salles GCSE Showcase

Pupils from De La Salle will be performing as part of Bespoke Dance Company alongside the current year 11 GCSE Dance pupils.

The dance piece is a culmination of work from our ‘Creative Workshops’. The emphasis of the hour long workshops, led by Di Armstrong, has been to show pupils how to start the process of choreographing movement, tapping into their creativity.

The dance piece called ‘Lost in Translation’ uses communication without words as its starting point, focusing on Semaphore, Sign Language and Braille to stimulate ideas. The pressure has been on to produce a dance, in six lessons, worthy of performance whilst giving the pupils opportunity to be as creative as possible. A Challenge, which I am sure they will rise to, for both Di and the dancers!

It Was Acceptable in the 80’s dance show

Bespoke Dance Company will be showcasing performances from both our adult and junior company at the De La Salle School dance show – ‘It Was Acceptable in the 80′s’. The collaboration will result in a thoroughly entertaining event, showcasing talent ranging from year 4 to adults.

The show takes place at the Theatre Royal, St Helens on the 13th, 14th & 15th July.
